Should you sit on a Fit Ball at work?

Should you sit on a Fit Ball at work?

Late last year, I wrote a blog ‘Is sitting at work killing you? The biggest work place danger’

People often ask whether they should wheel out their conventional chair and roll in a fit ball to sit on at work.

In theory, this sounds like a great plan. You would think that you would be forced to sit up straight and engage your core muscles to support yourself. Unfortunately, reality has a way of stamping on a good idea.

Firstly, it is not realistic to concentrate on you posture and position when you are distracted by the phone calls, the emails, and all the other work you are faced with.

Secondly, unless your core is super strong, you will likely fatigue

very quickly. When you fatigue, you are better off with a good support. I think some people have the misconception that you cannot slouch on a fit ball. Well you can, and when you do, it will do you more harm than good.

Don’t get me wrong, I think fit balls are fantastic tools when used properly and if you do use one, make sure it is well inflated and the right height such that when you sit on it, your hips and knees are at 90 degrees

I have no problem with the idea of using them for 10 minutes at a time every now and then at work, but please don’t throw away your chair.
